Aging is perhaps a word that everyone hates. By 12 to 14 years of age a teenager starts thinking abstractly. He starts making hypothesis, he develops theories, generalizations and logical reasoning becomes part of him. A teenager may find happiness in taking risks. The risk loving mind will also finds interest in planning future considering the possibilities. Sounds confusing? But it’s a fact. This is an exciting evolution phase for a teenager. Why I talk about teen age is because it’s the phase that abstract thinking starts and aging is the phase that age related changes in thinking occurs. To be more exact a decline in abstract thinking occurs.

One would have gone through a lot of losses on the way to be an elderly.

  1. Death of dear ones
  2. Impairments in vision
  3. Impairments in hearing
  4. Retirement
  5. Diminution in income and Economic instability.
  6. Depression
  7. Isolation.
  8. Physical illness
  9. Generation gap with grand children
  10. Difficulty in adjusting to changing circumstances

The Three Common Changes That Trigger Decline in Mental Status

  1. The number of Cortical brain cells get reduced
  2. Biochemical changes occurs in an aging brain
  3. Brain volume decreases. Brain shrinks.

Difficulties That an Elderly Man Faces

  1. Elderly person may complain of his memory.
  2. He forgets things easily.
  3. He may find difficulty in explain the details of an even.
  4. He struggles to recall the names of people and or objects.
  5. He retrieves data very slowly.
  6. He takes a lot of time in processing those data he retrieved.
  7. In short he finds difficulty in recalling all those stored memory.
  8. Ability to learn new things and to perform difficult task would have diminished over ages.
  9. More over his motor responses would be slow.
  10. With impaired hearing and vision he slowly walks ahead us. We like or not but all are following his path. Memory loss and impaired physical functions can strike us at any time in the journey of life.
