In Yoga we practice Bandas and Mudras. Let’s see what these are.
BANDAS
Bandas are the physiological locks. We contract different regions for each banda. The various types of bandas are
- Jalandara banda: This is used for restraining the breath below the level of glottis after inhalation.
- Udhyana banda: Expand the chest by mock inhalation, sucking in the relaxed abdominal muscle, so they lie flat on the spine.
- Moola banda: Press the premium with the left heal and keep the right heal above the genitals and contract.
These are very easy to practice, not at all difficult as it sounds, I’ll tell you, in Jalandara banda after breathing in, we try to lock the energy over the neck region, or in simple words we contract our neck region whereas in Udhyana banda, we contract our abdomen, and contact the buttocks region for Moola banda.
MUDRAS
Mudras are the symbolic representations. We adopt various mudras while meditating, doing Pranayama etc
- Chinmaya mudra: The tips of the forefingers touches the tips of the thumbs and the middle finger, the ring finger and the little finger are folded to touch the palm.
- Chin mudra: touch the tips of the thumb with the tip of fingers.
- Adi mudra: fold the thumb inside and fold the other fingers touching the palms.
- Brahma mudra: make the fist of both the palms with the thumb tucked inside and place them by the side of the navel.
- Namaskara mudra: join both the palms and place them on the chest with the thumbs touching the sternum.
