Complex Partial Seizures

by Dr Athira

Simple partial seizure is not the only variety in partial seizures. Complex partial seizure is one among the varieties of partial seizure. What differentiates a complex partial seizure from a simple partial seizure is the level of consciousness.

Complex Partial Seizures

Complex partial seizures are characterized by impaired consciousness. There could be a temporary confusion. Headaches are also reported. The patient may remember the initial psychic and autonomic symptom. But he may face a partial or total inability to recall past experiences during the later stages of the seizure. Complex Partial Seizure usually starts with Simple Partial Seizure or it may exhibit impaired consciousness from the beginning. The patient may appear confused.

The characteristics of a Simple Partial Seizure with psychic symptoms such as dreaming, fear/ anxiety/ anger, feeling of déjà vu [familiarity], unreality, complex hallucinations, having flashback experiences OR a Simple Partial Seizure with autonomic symptoms such as reddish skin coloration, vomiting sensation [nausea], and funny feeling in the epigastrium… may be experienced by a Complex Partial Seizure patient in the beginning. In 50% of cases, it’s seen that the patient won’t experience any focal manifestations as seen in a Simple Partial Seizure case. But in a Complex partial seizure, the patient may experience automatic motor behavior like chewing, smacking lips, unbuttoning clothes.
