H1N1 iPhone App
You know how those sleek Apple commercials tout that there’s an app for just about everything? Well, with the inception of this one, that capacious statement certainly seems much more plausible.
Since the aggressive swine flu virus (officially known as H1N1) first debuted earlier this year, the federal government and health officials have been warning us to brace ourselves for a widespread pandemic likely to hit this fall. And boy has it hit hard (it’s not even officially winter yet!). The estimate by federal officials that nearly 40 million doses of the H1N1 vaccine would be ready by now has fallen significantly short with just 16 million doses ready for shipment.
Clinics and hospitals all over the country have run out and President Obama recently declared a national emergency. Subsequently, the public health campaign against the virus is now pushing prevention instead of treatment.
Enter the HMSMobile Swine Flu Center, an iPhone app developed by the Harvard Medical School. The app offers video, animation and text designed to help users protect themselves, their home and their workplace from an H1N1 outbreak. A few of the features include an interactive guide to symptoms and alerts that will let you know if there’s an outbreak in your area.
Given the current hype over the virus and that the app was created by a trusted, renowned medical school, the app is expected to do quite well in the iTunes store. Click here to read the app review of other popular H1N1 apps.
