Yoga has been in practice for thousands of years. It has aroused a worldwide awakening and acceptance in the last few decades. It has emerged as a powerful exercise technique. We have got celebrities for propagating yogic practices. People do see it as an excellent technique to vitalize body. But I feel the real benefit of yoga is still hidden from the majority of the population. Yoga is friendly, cost effective system of medicine. Let’s see how it’s a system of medicine. Yogic techniques are so powerful in the prevention of disease, mitigation, and cure of disease and promotion of health.


ORIGIN OF YOGA

Its origin could be traced back to several thousand years. It originated in India. The founders of yogic practice were all great saints and sages. The system has evolved a lot .it got simplified to make it acceptable to a huge population worldwide, it’s no longer restricted to hermits and sages , it has been simplified to suit modern life style.

Maharshi Patanjali who is considered” The Father of Yoga”, has systematically simplified the various aspects of Yoga in his “Yoga Sutras” (aphorisms). He compiled the eight fold path of Yoga, popularly known as Ashtanga Yoga. Ashtanga yoga aims at the all round development of human personality.

The eight fold paths are

  1. Yama
  2. Niyama
  3. Asana
  4. Pranayama
  5. Prathyahara
  6. Dharana
  7. Dhyana
  8. Samadhi

What is Yoga actually?

In Sanskrit we say”yogaha karmasyu kaushalam”
,which means Yoga is the skill in action. But its asana/postures that come to every ones mind when we talk about the word Yoga. Asana is just a single step in yogic practices. What’s asana then? May I take the help of one more shloka from Sanskrit, its “sthiram sukham asanam”, which means which ever posture you are comfortable with and stable we call that, an asana. There are many different stages of asana too, from simple asana we can raise body flexibility step by step and proceed to advanced asana, or postures.

Salient features of yoga.

This practical discipline is set to improve or develop ones inherent powers in a balanced manner. In yogic words, advanced practices, and making yoga part of life offers ways to reach complete self-realization. In Sanskrit the very word yoga, means yoke. Thus yoga can also be defined as a means for uniting individual spirit with universal spirit.
You don’t have to think that by hearing all these, Yoga is a difficult task to understand and practice. Once you are under the clutches of stress, tension, and many diseases, you think of yoga. In this world I strongly recommend you to consider Yoga, to be part of your life. Yoga is universal in character, for practice and application, irrespective of culture, caste, creed, nationality, race, sex, age and physical condition. If you think that, you can be an accomplished yogi, without practice you are wrong. Only regular practice of yoga gives you all the benefits.

Again make sure that you learn yoga systematically from a recognized practitioner.
I strongly believe that we should know about the body type of a person, his/her diseases, what all he is prone to get, his/her genetic predisposition, then we can make a strict plan about how he should start practicing yoga.
Only regular practice, we call it ‘sadhana’. It’s something that creates a pattern in the body and mind to uplift them. Again to the best of your knowledge, a yogic medical practitioner do have limitations, he can motivate, but if we close our minds to such motivation, and we do yogic practices as a duty, is not going to fetch us anything. You come out of all obstacles, find time; above all it’s the keen desire on the part of the practitioner to experience that is going to gift you with higher states of consciousness.
